PROVISIONAL MUNICIPAL MARKET

Included within the Comprehensive Reform Project of the Municipal Market of Castellón de la Plana

CASTELLÓN DE LA PLANA (Castellón)

YEAR: 2025 – EXECUTION PROJECT

With the aim of not interrupting commercial activity, a temporary market is planned for Plaza Santa Clara prior to the start of the rehabilitation work, in order to be able to relocate the merchants.
Formerly, Plaza Santa Clara was occupied by a convent of Poor Clare nuns. After the secularization of religious orders in the 19th century, the building was converted into Castellón's first secondary school, which was demolished after the Spanish Civil War. Subsequently, the space was transformed and used as a parking lot until the 1980s, when it was decided to remodel it with the intention of reclaiming a public, pedestrian space.
Today, Plaza Santa Clara is entirely pedestrianized and features an arcaded area, street furniture such as lampposts, and a monument commemorating the founding of Castellón by James I of Aragon. Beneath the plaza lies the market's underground public parking garage.
Therefore, it is proposed to enable a temporary food stall area to maintain commercial activity during the market rehabilitation process, relocating the various departments of gastronomy, food sales, fishmonger, bars and kiosk, providing them with all the necessary facilities for their operation.
A dedicated fish market is also planned, which will allow vendors to transport their goods from the basement to the temporary market. In addition, the remaining entrances will have a connection to the existing portico, the flower shop to the north, and the accessible spaces adapted to facilitate circulation.
Given the existence of vehicular and pedestrian access to the parking lot in the same square, it will be able to continue serving both customers and workers during the course of the works.
