A band shell is an architectural structure specifically designed to improve sound quality and acoustics in both outdoor and indoor events in theaters and auditoriums.
«As a parameter representative of the listening conditions experienced by musicians on stage, with or without a shell, the so-called ST1 target support, defined by Gade, is used. This parameter represents the musicians' ability to hear themselves and the rest of the orchestra. The ST1 is defined as the ratio between the energy associated with the first reflections (between 20 and 100 ms) provided by the walls and ceiling of the stage, and the energy received in the first 20 ms, both values obtained at a distance of 1 m. from an omnidirectional source located on stage.”

An acoustic shell not only reflects the sound towards a specific listening point, but also encourages interaction between musicians, enabling harmonious execution and adjustment of the volume of their instruments in relation to the entire orchestra.
The #AcousticShell in the city of Niterói, in #Brazil, is a famous example of this type of structure. Designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, this acoustic shell is known for its modernist design and its ability to host concerts and other outdoor cultural events.
“The Acoustic Shell of Bello Monte” an Amphitheater with 66 years of history
Acoustic and aesthetic properties of the topography exploited for an open-air amphitheater
In 1949, urbanization works would begin on the land located to the southeast of the central part of Caracas, formerly occupied by the Hacienda Bello Monte, which extended on both sides of the Guaire River,….
The stage shell is made up of 8 independent curved modules or towers, 1m wide and 80m high. The folding system up to a maximum height of 4'00m, allows its rapid assembly and disassembly as well as its storage.
The entry of modern architectural acoustics on the scene dates back to 1895, when the Fogg Museum of Art, Harvard University's oldest art museum, opened its doors. In its early days, the acoustic quality of the venue left much to be desired, as the speakers' words were barely audible. To resolve this dilemma, the intervention of the American physicist Wallace Clement Sabine was required. https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallace_Clement_Sabine
Rehabilitation of “La Concha Acústica” in Agua Azul Park / S2 Arquitectura
In the Agua Azul Park in Guadalajara -one of the most significant public spaces in the city-, Architect Alejandro Zohn designed the Concha Acústica in 1957, a place for open-air concerts.
The new project is divided into: identification of existing original elements, complementary program, plaza and new entrance. The original surviving project is recovered, maintained as open space and the built edges are released in order to strengthen the relationship with the site.
